Riparian Buffer Walk

Otsego County Soil & Water Conservation District Stream Technician Mark Kugler will discuss the importance of riparian buffers, provide an overview of the riparian buffer program, and lead a tour of a buffer site. Meet at State Highway 166 across from Fish and Game Road at 10am.  Wear closed toed shoes and long pants.

Japanese knotweed is one of the most difficult to control invasive species in Otsego County. Join us at Mohican Farm for an hour or two chopping down Japanese knotweed, then enjoy cheese, crackers and a spectacular view of Otsego Lake afterward. Participants should dress to get dirty and should bring work gloves, pruners and their preferred beverage.

Float the Butternut

Back by popular demand, join OCCA and the Butternut Valley Alliance for a fun and informative paddle down one of the county's most beautiful creeks. We'll start at Bailey Road and end in Gilbertsville, a distance of about 5 water miles. Bring water and a snack, and your own canoe/kayak (a limited number of spaces are available in OCCA canoes). Pre-registration required. PLEASE NOTE: AS of 6/13, there are no more OCCA canoes available.

Botanist Dan Spada will guide participants in a beginner's course on how to identify 10 native tree species through the use of keys, guides and their senses during a combination of lab and field sessions. Water chestnut (Trapa natans) is spreading at this 40-acre lake on the western edge of Otsego County. Join OCCA and members of the Silver Lake community as we seek out and remove this pernicious invasive. Lunch will be provided to volunteers afterward by the lake's owner. Note: outside watercraft are not permitted at Silver Lake. Please use the registration form to sign up and reserve space in a canoe/kayak.

Join us at Mohican Farm for an evening of cutting (and maybe digging) down a stand of Japanese knotweed, then enjoy light refreshments in the garden overlooking Otsego Lake.
