Paddle and Pull – Goodyear Lake

Join us for a pleasant afternoon paddle on the Stump Lot portion of Goodyear Lake and help remove water chestnut, a highly invasive aquatic plant. Bring your own canoe or kayak, or use one of ours. Join Patricia Riddell Kent and Steve Kent, who donated the land for the state park, on this early evening walk around the northern portion of Robert V. Riddell State Park. Visit historic structures, walk through fields, forests, and along Schenevus Creek, and learn about the interesting history of the land. Meet at 6 p.m. at the Park’s main entrance on State Route 28, just north of I-88 Exit 17.

Help us remove litter from a 2-mile section of State Highway 80 in Springfield and Cooperstown! Bags, gloves and safety equipment provided as part of New York State’s Adopt-A-Highway program. Pre-registration required, 12 years and up only. Meet at OCCA’s office at Mohican Farm, 7207 State Highway 80, Cooperstown, NY. This activity will take two to three hours. Please wear long pants and dress to get dirty.

OCCA Executive Director Leslie Orzetti takes you "up the creek" at Mohican Farm. Dr. Orzetti will cover topics in stream ecology and give attendees a hands-on experience collecting water quality and critter samples from the creek, and will also introduce the brand new Citizen Science Water Quality Monitoring Program and provide a brief overview of what volunteers can expect when the program begins this fall.

Household Hazardous Waste Day – September 8

The Otsego County Solid Waste Department will be collecting a variety of household hazardous wastes, free of charge, from 8 a.m. – 11 a.m. at the Unadilla Highway Department, 216 County Highway 3, Unadilla. Hazardous materials accepted include paints, pesticides, solvents, mercury, chemical cleaners, automotive and household batteries, anti-freeze, pool chemicals, fluorescent and CFL bulbs, and more. OCCA, working in conjunction with the Alliance for Aquatic Resource Monitoring (ALLARM), is launching the first county-wide Citizen Science Water Quality Monitoring Program in the New York portion of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed. To become an OCCA Stream Team monitor, join us for this training with ALLARM staff and learn how to measure and record important water quality parameters such as dissolved oxygen, pH, and nutrients.
