Recurring event see all

07/29/2020 @ 9:30 am to 10:00 am

Join us for another watershed talk! This series highlights conservation initiatives and projects taking place throughout the Upper Susquehanna watershed, the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay. Topics will be geared toward land owners, conservation districts, municipal officials, conservation professionals and municipal highway staff. Current topics: July 29: Increasing Sustainability Through Management in Panther Lick Watershed August 5: Cover Crops in the Northeast Cover cropping is probably the most important thing you can do to keep soil and nutrients where they should be: in your field where you can utilize them.  However, establishing them in the NE has been challenging. Bradford County Soil & Water Conservation District will share their experiences using a Highboy Interseeder for the last two years, which will help you in your quest to grow good cover crops. August 12: Wetland Restoration in the Watershed with the USC Wetland Team Wetland restoration is an important component of our watershed management and nutrient reduction efforts. The USC Wetland team will discuss highlights of recent restoration projects and wetland team goals. August 19: Ditch Management Practices and Replumbing David Orr, PE & Rebecca Schneider, from Cornell University’s Local Roads Program will discuss their survey of ditch management practices in NYS, an example of a watershed replumbing project in a local county, and some work being done with student interns this summer. August 26: Prioritizing Stream Culvert Projects through Multiple Data Sources Cortland County SWCD has incorporated multiple assessments and datasets to help ensure a holistic and systematic approach to culvert replacement projects addressing habitat and public infrastructure issues. This presentation will describe how they used the I4 Assessment, NAACC, Cornell Culvert Model, and Culvert Condition to prioritize culvert and aquatic organism passage projects.
