
This is our last Eco-Bulletin of 2022! Thank you for reading all year and staying up to date with what’s going on at OCCA. Even though it’s getting cold, we have some great programming coming up this winter.


Naked Eye Astronomy December 17, 7:00-8:30pm Mohican Farm Workshop Join OCCA Treasurer, Jim Hill for a night of Naked Eye Astronomy on Saturday, December 17, from 7:00-8:30 pm at Mohican Farm in Springfield. Hill will lead participants in an introduction to the night sky, where Mars and Jupiter will be visible along with Orion in the east and some of the gorgeous 1st magnitude winter sky stars, along with many more surprises. The group will meet at the Mohican Farm workshop at 7:00 pm for a brief introduction before going outside. Participants are encouraged to bring a camp chair to sit on and to dress warmly. In the event of rain, snow, or cloudy weather, we will reschedule for January 21, 2023. Program is free, please pre-register using the form below. HEMLOCK WOOLLY ADELGID INFORMATION AND TRAINING Saturday, January 14, 10am-1pm, Morris Firehouse, 117 Main St., Morris Join OCCA, The Clark Foundation/Mohican Farm, and Butternut Valley Alliance for this session on hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA). This indoor/outdoor program will cover identifying eastern hemlock trees and the hemlock woolly adelgid, the significant role hemlocks play in our region, the impacts of hemlock woolly adelgid, and treatment options for affected trees. The outdoor portion will cover how to conduct surveys for the adelgid and how to report your findings. We are seeking volunteers who will be able to spend some time outdoors this winter surveying hemlocks to help us determine the extent of the hemlock woolly adelgid invasion. Please dress for the field. Light refreshments will be served. The program is free but registration is preferred. SAVE THE DATE: Get the Kids Out! Monday, January 16 Kids driving you crazy on a school holiday? Get the kids out! OCCA Education Specialists Shelby MacLeish and Liz Brown will take them on a fun and informative adventure exploring a wintry landscape.
